GC 35: Newly Elected Regional Superiors
  1. Fr. General annouced another appointment of a major superior for Africa.  David Smolira, S.J. has been appointed Regional Superior of South Africa.  Born in the United Kingdom, David was the former provincial of Great Britain (1999-2005), He is currently the director of the Jesuit Institute of Faith and Culture in Johannesburg as well as the local superior.  He  takes over from Mike Lewis, S.J.  South Africa is a region of the Great Britain Province.

"Fr. General also announced the appointment of Fr. Virgilio Arimateia Domingos as the new Regional Superior of MozambiqueFr. Domingos is the Assistant for Formation for the Region and the second indigenous Jesuit to be appointed major superior of the region.  The late Fr. Cirilo Moisés Mateus was in fact the first indigenous Jesuit to serve as regional superior. He served his first term from 1987-1993 and died in a car crash while he was on his second term of arduous service to the region (1999 - 2001). Mozambique is a region of the Portugal Province."
