Pre-Diaconate interview with Amaechi Miletus Ugwu, SJ

f. Do you harbor regrets of any sort?

No! I have no doubt that God planned things the way they are from of old.

g. What are you hopes and dreams as you are being made a deacon en route to being absorbed into the presbyterate? What is it that you bring to the table ?

Good question. So many things have combined to sustain me. Some of them include prayer, love of family and friends, laughter, good community experience, good and understanding superiors as well as intellectual curiosity.

h. What has sustained you over these years as a Jesuit?

As I humbly accept this calling to diaconate and priesthood, I can confidently say that my hopes and dreams are not very different from those of all men and women of good will around the world, namely: that our world may know God, and be a better, safer, peaceful place where all may live a responsible and fulfilling life.

i. Do you find fulfillment in this way of life you have chosen?

Why do you ask that? This is not a profession mind you. It is a calling. It is much more that self fulfillment. It is about responding to the will of God. What we pray for is faithfulness, not necessarily fulfillment. Having said that, I must confess that I always pray for fulfillment and happiness in this way of life I have chosen.

j. In a world where the idea of celibacy and chastity are gradually being corroded by the torrent of modernism, how are you able to deal with this dynamics in terms of your relationship with both male and female sexes?

My style is simple. Be yourself at all times and recognize that our vocation is not an easy one, particularly in this post-modern era where the media has made sex as the ultimate reason for our existence. I am not afraid to accept that God created the world and its people to be very beautiful. I appreciate the world and enjoy it, but I always try to be as open to my superiors, spiritual directors and to my good friends within and outside the Society as much as possible. An issue discussed is already half solved, you know? Above all, I try to maintain a balanced and healthy relationship with both men and women that life’s daily cares throw my way every day.
