About the Jesuits

Anw IHS Logo. The Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits, is a Catholic religious order of priests and brothers founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. The Jesuits serve the Church and the larger human community through various ministries – educational, spiritual and pastoral. The Society of Jesus with its general curia in Rome comprises of organizational units called provinces. The North-West Africa Province is one amongst the many provinces spread all over the world.
The North-West Africa Province of the Society of Jesus is constituted of the five English speaking West Africa Countries namely: Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia. The North-West Africa Province emerged from what used to be known as the Nigeria-Ghana Region of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus.

Presently, the North-West Africa Province comprises of members from two multicultural countries (Nigeria and Ghana) in West Africa and share a heritage of hospitality and generosity.

These hopes and dreams of the Jesuits presently in Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia include setting foot on the other countries that also constitute the province namely Sierra Leone and the Gambia. Jesuits are united by a goal to set the world on fire with Christ's love by their zeal for the salvation of souls.

St. Ignatius and the founding fathers sought to bring Christ's message of love, peace, and justice to the world by engaging in various ministries-education, catechesis, and fruitful conversations with the people they encountered. The Jesuits of this Province also seek to achieve this same goal through their ministries, always going for the magis. They desire to effect a positive change wherever their superior sees the greater need and assigns them.

Jesuits are called to be men for others by helping others realize that they are saved by the insurmountable love of Christ expressed in the act of His death and resurrection for all men and women.
