When the Jesuits first moved into Surulere, Lagos to No. 4 L Agusto Close, the staff consisted of a cook who lived on the compound and who also served as a security man. The Fathers drove themselves, typed their own letters and kept their own files. Life was simpler back then. Presently the Jesuits in the Provincial House have grown in number to six: the Provincial, the Socius, the Treasurer, the Director of Development, the Website/Communications director and the “Minister of the House” who oversees practical details of the running of the house.
In a similar way the staff has grown from one to ten. These dedicated, competent and hard working staff members are key to the inner workings of the North-West
Africa Province. The Staff are:
Ms. Catherine Madubuogo is now in her 11th year with the Jesuits. She is receptionist, computer whiz, first responder to vocation inquiries, and cheerful accomplisher of any task thrown her way by any of the six Jesuits at the Provincial Office.
Longest, not in employment, but in the number of hours spent per day is Mr. Godwin Amuno. He is Staff Coordinator and Compound Manager. To Godwin fall the tasks of liaising with offices of Immigration, Passport Control, Drivers Licences, Taxes, NEPA, NITEL, Multilinks and hosts of other offices. He knows not only the offices, but the ways of dealing with the people who are essential for providing for the myriad of needs of the Jesuits of the province.
They say an army travels on its belly. One look at the bellies of the Jesuits in the Provincial Office shows this army could travel to China and back and not run short of food.
Mr. Lawrence Unutame works the miracle of multiplying the loaves in fishes each day in the curia kitchen. He also does the shopping for the community and cleans all of house no. 4 where the Pro
vincial, Socius and Development Director live.
The Jesuits at the Provincial Residence are such friendly people that it seems that all the Jesuits in the province, those desiring to become Jesuits, many former Jesuits and people who never have thought about being Jesuits like to come and visit. Staying on top of the guest rooms and the laundry is Ms. Anthonia Oloyede.
Withso many visitors and so many errands to be run, the curia hires two drivers, Mr. Francis Ajayi and Mr. Gabriel Bewaji. Many are the nights they have had to stay in the drivers’room because of early morning or late nightruns.
To assure that the Jesuits do not have to sleep with one eye open, there is a capable staff of four security men who provide round the clock surveillance as well as tending the front gate. They are Mr. Hilary Anidiobi, Mr. James Kwagshi, Mr. Eugene Eze, and Mr. Michael Ubenyi. They also do tremendous work in ke
eping the grounds clean and the flowers and the grass tidy and attractive. Assisting them in their security work are three ferocious German Shepherds: Samson, Eldee and Magie. Sworn to the vows of poverty (no pay) and obedience (sometimes) they do not share in the Jesuit vow of celibacy. With all of the trusted team of security, there has never been a break-in at the Provincial Residence in the 45 year history of the Jesuits there.
Joseph Stanislaus Okoye, S.J., is now the minister of the provincial's residence as well as the curia. Thus, he will be responsible for the needs of the Jesuits living at the Curia. He will also be handling all travel needs of the men of the province. You can contact Joseph Okoye via email. Special thanks to you Joseph for your generousity.
Fr. Chijioke Azuawusiefe, SJ.,
is the director of development. He will oversee the running of the development office. You can contact Fr. Chijioke via email. In addition to the Province Staff, we have Edmund Agorhom, S.J., as the director of communications. His chief responsibility will be overseeing and running the province’s website. Edmund also doubles up as Fr. Chijioke's assistant in the development office. Fr. Peter Chidolue, S.J., is the Province Treasurer. As treasurer he
will be overseeing and managing the financial transactions of the entire province. He is equally assisted by Ms.
Emmanuella Nnadi.
By Fr. Jerry Aman, S.J., the Socius of the Province
