As has been hinted at in the previous footnote, a novice is one who is undergoing the first two years of probation and studying of the Constitution and the way of life of the Society of Jesus. It is after one has spent the aforementioned two years in the novitiate and is found worthy and ready for mission in the Society by the superior that one is requested to apply for the first simple and perpetual vows in the Society.
